Certificate in Indigenous Human Resources Essentials
The Certificate in Indigenous Human Resources (CIHRE) is a 3-level, 18-course training program that focuses on the daily operations of First Nation organizations. This program is for all levels of experience, focusing on everything from foundational topics to more complex and advanced topics.
CIHRE will offer participants a deep and expansive understanding of HR and provide you with tools and strategies to apply in the workplace. This program is delivered by an Indigenous facilitator or a facilitator with extensive experience working in Indigenous organizations.
The Certificate in Indigenous Human Resource Essentials welcomes attendees with varied level of education backgrounds. With no pre-requisites, attendees can enter the program at any time. Courses can be completed in any order at a schedule that complements participants’ professional environment. Participants can also select courses based on topics that align with their responsibilities.
A Certificate in Indigenous HR Essentials will be granted to participants at the completion of each Level (6 Courses Completed). To be eligible one must have been present in person for the full session series of each individual course.

Level one
- Ethics and Professionalism (Level 1, Course 1):Ethics is an important topic in today’s business and work environment. In fact, the risk of unethical practices outside of what is considered morally right or proper can ruin your career and/or destroy your agency or business. This program will create increased awareness to ethical issues in the workplace.
- Recruitment and Selection (Level 1, Course 2): This program provides an overview of the recruitment process and how to develop progressive steps so that legal risks are minimized.
- Communicating Effectively (Level 1, Course 3): This program provides an overview of the complexity and importance of managing the message so that conflict is avoided.
- Managing Difficult Conversations (Level 1, Course 4): Supervisors need to apply higher level of skills in dealing with this conflict while ensuring a fair, consistent and transparent process. This program provides an overview of how to manage the difficult conversations that accompany conflict in the workplace.
- Team Building for Success (Level 1, Course 5): Learn what it takes to build a high performing team and become familiar with the 5 dysfunctions of a team. This program will highlight the importance of teambuilding and provide strategies for building a strong team in the workplace.
- Understanding Legislation and Human Resources (Level 1, Course 6): This program will focus on the history behind employment legislation and will provide a “deep dive” on employment legislation as it relates to Indigenous communities.
Level two
- Essentials of HR Policy Manuals (Level 2, Course 1): This program will enable participants to understand the different dynamics of HR policies including how to structure and write effective policies and procedures
- Managing Chronic Absenteeism (Level 2, Course 2): While policies may be in place, supervisors need to carefully focus on following a fair, consistent and transparent process. This program will assist participants to understand the complexity of absenteeism in the workplace.
- Substance Abuse in the Workplace (Level 2, Course 3): This program will help participants identify the issues related to Cannabis and create strategies to overcome them in your organization
- Mental Wellness in the Workplace (Level 2, Course 4): This program will outline the complexity and growing priority of mental health wellness in the workplace and how this can be integrated into all areas of human resources.
- Workplace Health and Safety (Level 2, Course 5): This training program is for general awareness of rights, responsibilities and safety practices for organizations, employers and employees.
- Employee Coaching and Development (Level 2, Course 6): This program provides a good background for the rationale of coaching employees and provides strategies to create a successful program.
Level three
- Conflict Resolution and Mediation (Level 3, Course 1): If conflicts, disagreements, and differences of opinion escalate into interpersonal conflict, managers must intervene to resolve the issues. This program provides an overview of interpersonal conflict in an organization and how to manage it effectively.
- Building your Financial Intelligence (Level 3, Course 2): This program is focused on helping participants understand how accounting works and how everything fits together to create an accurate financial picture of your program and/or organization.
- Leading Strategic Change Management (Level 3, Course 3): All leaders need to have the skills to initiate and implement change, help others understand the reasons for change, and assimilate change throughout the organization. This program brings about an understanding of change and organizational dynamics and how to lead change in an organization.
- Effective Employee and Labour Relations (Level 3, Course 4): Participants will be taught to understand the concept of employee relations and will teach a set of tools and techniques to manage the complex work challenges and prevent calls for unionization.
- Effective Workplace and Succession Planning (Level 3, Course 5): This program outlines a consistent, disciplined approach for matching people resources with both anticipated and unanticipated needs. Future-proof your organization with the knowledge and tools.
- Managing Compensation and Benefits (Level 3, Course 6): This program will help participants to create a practical understanding of the main aspects of compensation and benefits programming, and to understand current methodologies and strategies for effective delivery and management.

Certificate in Indigenous Management Essentials
The Certificate in Indigenous Management Essentials (CIME) is a 3-level, 18-course training program that focuses on a combined partnership approach of Human Resources and Managers, learning how to navigate the ever-changing organizational landscape in harmony while keeping the focus on the unique challenges of First Nations organizations.
This program is for all levels of experience, focusing on building each participant's human resource knowledge and skills taken in our Certificate in Indigenous HR Essentials Program, and creating a pathway for managers to learn and connect with each employee on a Human Resources level.
CIME will offer participants a deep and expansive understanding of management and provide you with tools and strategies to apply in the workplace.
This program is delivered by an Indigenous facilitator or a facilitator with extensive experience working in Indigenous organizations.
